Minecraft is a massively popular franchise and maybe the most well-known video game in the world. Since its release, many imitators and clones have come forth, resulting in a boom of open-world survival crafting games, some of which have gone on to become successes in their own right.

Its gameplay loop, first introduced to players in 2011, is still one that other games have tried to replicate, with various degrees of success. Prepare during the morning, collecting resources, building defenses, and crafting weapons and armor to survive the waves of mobs during the night.

As mobs get progressively stronger throughout your playthrough, it is important to craft strong gear to compensate. Furthermore, you can craft armor of different materials, and your armor set can directly reflect your progress.

This guide is all about the different Armor in Minecraft, and how you can craft them.

All Armor Types in Minecraft

Armor sets consist of four separate pieces: Helmets, Chestplates, Leggings, and Boots. Furthermore, Armor can be of 7 different tiers: Leather, Chainmail, Iron, Gold, Diamond, and Netherite.

However, only 5 of these can be crafted with raw materials: Leather, Iron, Gold, and Diamond. Diamond Armor can be upgraded to Netherite using Netherite Upgrade and Netherite Ingot.

Helmet

Helmets are worn on the head and reduce damage taken by 8%. To craft them, you’ll need five of the same material and arrange them as shown below:

As you can see, to craft an Iron Helmet, you’ll need five Iron Ingots.

Chestplate

Chestplates reduce damage taken by 32% and require eight of the same material to craft.

Leggings

Leggings reduce damage taken by 24% and require seven of the same material to craft.

Boots

Boots, like Helmets, reduce damage taken by 8% but only require four of the same material to craft.

Netherite Armor

You can get Netherite Armor by upgrading Diamond Armor with a Netherite Ingot using a Netherite Upgrade. This can be done with any piece of Diamond Armor.

Furthermore, Netherite Armor provides the most protection against damage with the hierarchy of armor tiers being as follows (from weakest to strongest):

  • Leather
  • Gold
  • Chainmail
  • Iron
  • Diamond
  • Netherite

Turtle Shell

The Turtle Shell is a unique helmet that has no other corresponding piece of armor. To craft it, you’ll need 5 Scutes, which are dropped by baby turtles when they grow into adults.

Other Ways to Get Armor in Minecraft

Besides Crafting, there are numerous other ways to get your hands on some armor.

Mobs that have armor equipped have a small chance of dropping armor when killed. The armor dropped can vary in durability – from zero to having its full durability. Mobs that typically pick up armor include zombies, skeletons, and zombified piglins.

Armor can also be bought from villagers, specifically leatherworker villagers, who sell leather armor, and armorer villagers, who sell iron armor, chainmail armor, and enchanted diamond armor.

Armor can also be found in chests throughout the game.

Furthermore, you can only get chainmail through mob drops, chest loot, and trading. As of the time of writing, chainmail armor cannot be crafted.

Defense Points of Different Armor

Armor gives you different defense points according to their tier. The defense points given by all pieces of armor are as shown below:
