He met Carl Roland, a young producer in Kansas City in 1993. When they arrived in Los Angeles, they started working together. Powell received his big break when Louis Silas, Jr. saw him sing at an artist showcase and signed him to a recording contract shortly after.

He had released 4 albums, the most recent being in 2003. Powell was also recognized as the older brother of Trina Powell and Tamara Powell, two other R&B singers. Unfortunately, Powell passed away on 13th September 2022 just a day after his 51st birthday due to a heart attack.

Early Life

Jesse Powell was born on 12th September 1971 in Gary, Indiana. He grew up with his three siblings, Jacob as well as Trina and Tamara, who later became famous R&B singers, they released their only album in 1999 and are best recognized for their song “What’d You Come Here For?”

He spent the majority of his childhood in Gary, Indiana, with his family, and was an active member of church music. Powell finished his education in a private school in Gary, Indiana, and then attended Hampton University for his higher education.

Career Beginnings

In the early 1990s, Powell and his siblings competed in local talent competitions and he was eventually founded by a producer named Carl Roland. He then began working with label executive Louil Silas Jr.

Louis signed Powell to his Silas Records label and the two began working on music. Powell released his first album, “All I Need,” three years later in 1996 which was a minor success, peaking at number 32 on the Billboard R&B music chart.

Powell followed up his debut album with another album, a lead single in the same year which peaked at number 35 on the Billboard R&B music chart. His second album increased his popularity among music fans.

Eventually, he produced a remade version of the classic ‘Gloria,’ originally released by the R&B music group Enchantment the same year which reached number 51 on the Billboard R&B music chart.

Breakthrough

Powell became a tremendous success after releasing his lead single from his second album ‘I Wasn’t With It’ which was a big success and was his first album to chart in Billboard music. Powell followed up the great success of ‘I Wasn’t With It’ with another album called ‘Bout It.’

Powell gained mainstream success and fame when he included the song ‘You’ in his album ‘Bout It.’ Powell and Silas Record had planned to feature ‘You’ on his next album, but the success of ‘Bout It’ pushed them to include the song, and things turned out well for Powell after ‘You.’

‘Bout It’ reached number two on the Billboard R&B chart and number ten on the Billboard music chart. As his album’s sales soared, the RIAA awarded it a gold certificate, and ‘Bout It’ became his trademark album.

Powell signed with MCA Records when Silas Records merged with it after the death of Louil Silas Jr. In 2000, he released his first single “If I” on MCA Records which peaked at number 58 on the Billboard R&B chart.

Following his release in 2000, Jesse Powell recorded two albums under MCA Records, ‘jp’ in 2001 and ‘Something In The Past’ the same year before leaving MCA Records and joining Riviera Records.

His 4th studio album ‘Jesse’ was released in 2003 as his debut release with Riviera Records. Powell’s final album was ‘Jesse’ before he decided to retire from the music industry after releasing three more songs from the record.
