Trey Lance has been really unlucky in his professional football career. Despite being drafted third overall in the 2021 NFL draft by the 49ers, Lance hasn’t seen much playing time and now Adam Schefter has said that he might be demoted to third-string. Lance turned out to be a real-life example of “the bigger they are, the harder they fall.”
NFL Insider Adam Schefter appeared on the latest episode of “The Pat McAfee Show” and was asked about the quarterback situation in San Fran. He was specifically asked about Trey Lance and whether or not the 49ers were looking to trade him.
Schefter replied, “There really was never a lot of interest in Trey Lance. … There was no trade market.” He further added that the 49ers signed Sam Darnold on the first day of free agency which speaks volumes. Schefter claims that if Darnold was signed on the first date itself then the team has been following him and studying him and really liked his gameplay.
Right now, Brock Purdy is healing from his surgery and there is no doubt that he will be the starting quarterback if he is 100 percent healthy going into Week 1. If not, then it is most likely that Sam Darnold gets the job given he has actual experience being a full-time starter even if it wasn’t successful.

Trey Lance has started only 4 games in his two-year career
There is a lot of time remaining in the offseason and surely there will be a battle between Lance and Darnold, but it looks like at least Adam Schefter has written off the 23-year-old quarterback.
After being drafted by the San Francisco 49ers, Trey Lance signed a $34.1 million rookie contract with them. He spent most of his rookie year as a backup to Jimmy Garoppolo. He was then named starter for the 2022 season but fractured his right ankle, which effectively ended his season.
After Jimmy G went down in Week 13 last year, Brock Purdy came into play and the rest is history. Purdy became a legend winning every game and leading the team to the NFC Championship game. Purdy’s calm exterior in the face of pressure and the way he led the offense earned him respect in the locker room and in the league.
Trey Lance has started in four games in his NFL career and has gone 2-2 in those games. The former first-round pick was a sensation in his collegiate career, which led to him being a top draft prospect. However, injuries have hindered his way to making his mark, and with Purdy in the same locker room, it will be a herculean task for Lance to become the starting QB with any field time.
It does seem like Trey Lance is the third-string quarterback for now, but nothing is set in stone. Maybe he beats Sam Darnold in the offseason workouts and maybe Purdy isn’t recovered. A lot of maybes, but this might be the only way towards the end of the tunnel for Trey Lance.
