On Tuesday (July 2), Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro created one of the biggest upsets by beating defending champion Marketa Vondrousova in the first round of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships on Centre Court. This made the tennis star from the Czech Republic the only second defending champion to lose in the first round of Wimbledon in the Open Era after Steffi Graf in 1994. 

The victory over Vondrousova was also Bouzas Maneiro’s first victory in the main draw. It was her third main draw appearance of her career at a major event. Also it took just 67 minutes for the Spaniard to beat Vondrousova after converting all her five break points, winning with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-2. 

Before her win over sixth seed Vondrousova, Bouzas Maneiro never won a match over a Top 40 player before. At the same time, Bouzas Maneiro also played against a Top 10 player for the second time, previously meeting Jelena Ostapenko in the 2024 Madrid Open. The 2024 Wimbledon was Bouzas Maneiro’s second Wimbledon appearance, having played in the 2023 edition, which was also her debut in a major tournament.
